I like the conclusion you came to, though I think it's more a function of the writing than Leto himself. He was probably dealt a bad hand of writers, convinced that the Joker needed to prove his insanity. But insanity is like everything else in that if you have to prove that you belong, you don't.
Okay but on a serious note I LOVED Joaquim's adaptation of Arthur Fleck. I love it so much I have the poster still hanging in my home office. The acting, the writing, and the choices made for filming were incredible.
